The Sidney Prize

The Sidney Prize recognizes outstanding journalism that exposes social and economic injustice. Each winner receives a $500 honorarium and an exclusive prize designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. Submissions may come from any source, and submission deadline is typically the last day of every month.

This award was established by Sidney Hillman’s family and friends to honor his progressive ideas, scholarship, education, and media freedom advocacy. Since its formation, the Hillman Foundation has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars towards scholarships, research projects, lecture series on campus, and other programs. Furthermore, The Hillman Prize program has long been at the heart of their concerns with free press as it recognizes contributors of daily and periodical newspapers, authors, broadcasters as well as broadcasters who contribute daily or periodical columns or broadcast programs that embody these responsibilities responsibilities – since 1950 the prize has recognized contributors of daily or periodical newspapers in addition to authors or broadcasters for their services rendered during an award presentation ceremony held every year on October 2nd since 1950 for publication of their articles or broadcasted broadcasters or publications which contributed daily or periodical contributors or contributors who acted responsibly within such programs or initiatives e.

Dr. Kate Carte received the Oomhundro Institute Early American History and Culture/University of North Carolina Press 2024 Prize for Religion and the American Revolution: An Imperial History (Omohundro Institute Early American History and Culture/UNC Press 2021). This prize honors an exceptional work written by a North American scholar in American religious history; additionally, each year an advanced graduate student or recent PhD is recognized with an annual Hillman Prize award for producing outstanding dissertation research articles in American religious history.

Each year, the Sydney Peace Foundation recognizes a nominee who works to advance “peace with justice”, human rights and nonviolence. Their prize was announced at a ceremony held in Sydney Australia this November; previous recipients have included Julian Burnside, Professor Noam Chomsky and former Irish President Mary Robinson as winners.

Professor Ron Rash of Mercer University’s Spencer B. King Center for Southern Studies was honored to receive the 2020 Sidney Lanier Prize for Southern Literature this past April. This prize honors 19th century Southern poet Sidney Lanier (b. Macon, Georgia). This prize recognizes writers who engage with and further the tradition of writing about the South.

The Society for the History of Technology has awarded Stephan Miescher the 2023 Sidney Edelstein Prize, for his book A Dam for Africa: Akosombo Stories from Ghana (Indiana University Press 2022). This prize recognizes outstanding scholarly works related to technology history with broad appeal across scholarly as well as non-specialized reading audiences.

The 2024 Sidney Prize was given to a team from University of Sydney academics who excelled at Australia’s Science Oscars – or Eureka Prizes. Horizon Fellow Dr Mengyu Li and the Sensory Conservation Team led by Professor Peter Banks won Outstanding Mentor of Researchers while Professor Kate Jolliffe of University of Sydney Laboratory for Animal Welfare and Biodiversity along with Professor Peter Masters from School of Physics won Leadership in Scientific Research as well as Schools Science Engagement respectively – the prize was presented in Melbourne on Feb 28.
